ABRSM Distinction!

Hooray! Distinction for my student’s ABRSM Grade 1 exam! 💐🎉🎊She worked really hard for her exam and was overjoyed to get her certificate. Well done!

Her exam period was the first session of 2019, during which an increasing number of Covid restrictions were being implemented. She was really fortunate to have been given an early exam date, for if she were given any later, her exam would have been cancelled like the other hundreds of students across Singapore.

She made it through the challenges of learning the more difficult pieces in Grade 1 while transitioning from the beginner level, and persevered through the scales and sight-reading - the parts where most students dread.

She was really nervous just before the exam and even after she exited the exam room. It was a long and painful wait for the results. Finally, we got news that she had gotten a distinction! Everyone was so happy for her 🥳

She played 3 pieces for the exams:

- She loved her C piece especially because of the swing rhythms, and

- her B piece because it was a lovely lullaby, and

- her A piece for the loudness and fun challenges of changing chords.

Her highest score was 29/30 for the C piece because the examiner was awed by the energy of her swing rhythms. She also almost hit a perfect score in Aural, 17/18, because she loved listening to and describing sounds.

I’d like to end off with a food for thought:

What do you need to push for a distinction?
